Friday Flashback: June 14, 2013 – June 27, 2013

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I essentially just re-hash the events of my week (or two weeks in this particular case), bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

It’s pretty sad, but I only read two books in these past two weeks – I was kind of in a bit of a reading slump :( I read If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch and LOVED IT, and I just finished Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith which was really good too!

In the way of books I got this week, I picked up Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo, Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne, and Unremembered by Jessica Brody, all for the Fierce Reads tour! :D
what i did

On Friday, June 14, I went to the Taylor Swift concert in Toronto with my friend Lara, and we had an amazing time! The concert was literally so fantastic, which I did not expect. We had got free tickets from Lara’s uncle, and so we decided we would go because WHO PASSES UP FREE TAYLOR SWIFT TICKETS! Anywhoooo, I’d seen Taylor perform live on award shows in the past, and I wasn’t wowed. But at this concert?! OMG. She was flippin’ amazing! And Ed Sheeran, one of her opening acts was absolutely to die for. He puts on a really good show for being up on stage all by himself.

photo-2 photo-1

The picture of us together isn’t very good – we had a security guard take it for us and I don’t think he understood iPhones…. Oh well. And also… I’ll give you a fair warning, but the picture below is not as it seems! As amazing as it would have been to actually meet Taylor Swift, the person in the picture below is her body double. But we did sneak past security to get our picture taken with her! hahaha

photo-3

The weekend I saw Taylor Swift was also the weekend that my city hosts it’s annual Sound of Music Festival where Canadian bands from across the country come and play outdoor shows at a park right down on Lake Ontario! I went to see Small Town Pistols play on Saturday, and they were so good! They were really friendly too :)

Last Wednesday I went to the Fierce Reads tour with my friend Yasmine from over at The Yasmine Public Library. This was my first signing, and it was so much fun! The authors were all great and I loved hearing them talk. Even before the even had started, we were wandering around upstairs at Indigo Yorkdale, and JESSICA BRODY CAME UP TO ME and introduced herself. She asked us if we were attending the event, and when we said yes proceeded to hand me a banana and asked me to assist her in pranking Leigh Bardugo during the signing part of the event! The long and short of it is that I had to give Leigh the banana when I got my book signed, and give her no explanation about it whatsoever. It was a bananagra – SO WEIRD! Anyways, it was amazing getting to meet Jessica Brody, Emmy Laybourne, Leigh Bardugo, Gennifer Goodwin, and Anna Banks, and getting all my books signed was fun!

what i heard

After hearing Ed Sheeran live at the Taylor Swift concert, I have been listening to his music non-stop. Mostly these two songs:

Friday Flashback: May 31, 2013 – June 13, 2013

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I essentially just re-hash the events of my week (or two weeks in this particular case), bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

These past two weeks I read That Summer by Sarah Dessen, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, The Secret Ingredient by Stewart Lewis, and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo! The first two books are beach-y, summery types of books because I was at a cottage last weekend, and I felt that fit the atmosphere. The Secret Ingredient was an eARC from NetGalley and I read and reviewed, and Shadow and Bone was read because I’m going to the Fierce Reads tour next week and I’m meeting Leigh Bardugo!

As for books that I picked up this week, I have a few different sources. I checked out a used book store close to my house, and I picked up four books there for only 3 dollars each! Hardcover copies of Nineteen Minutes by Jody Picoult, Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella, and Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin, as well as a paperpack copy of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I received an ARC of Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith from Harper Teen this past week as well (even though it’s been out for a little bit :P) From NetGalley I received eARCs of Burning by Elana K. Arnold, Parasite by Mira Grant, and Skin by Donna Jo Napoli. I also bought The 100 Year Old Man who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.

what i did

The weekend before last I went one of my friend’s cottage with about 10 other friends for four days! We had a great time hanging around the beach, and hanging in the house too (it was rainy for two of the days). Also, my friends and I are very musical people, so there were about 4 guitars down there and everyone was playing music and signing along and it was great!

After getting home on Monday night, I got sick :( I had a pretty bad cold, so I had to call into work sick for two of my shifts. I was feeling a little better by Friday, so I ended up going out with Lara, Emily, Stephanie and Vikki to see the movie The Internship. We all loved it and thought it was HILARIOUS!

Monday brought one of the most exciting things I’ve done in a while, and that was have a Harry Potter (half) Movie Marathon!!! WE watched the first 4 movies (hence the half-marathon) and it took us from 10 in the morning until 10 at night, with lunch and dinner breaks thrown in there. What made it so awesome is that the four of us that had the marathon are all HP fanatics, so the event was complete with a bunch of Harry Potter food, butterbeer, wands, and Hogwarts house decorations!485611_4465016117217_61546441_n

Tuesday I had a hair appointment and got more blonde highlights put in my hair. I have a bad habit of changing my hair colour, and I always seem to come back to blonde, so I’ve decided that I am going to go blonde and stay blonde for a while!!! (Plus blonde was my natural hair colour as a kid, so it’s what I’m used to.) I can’t wait until I’m fully blonde again! Later on the day I tutored a few kids in math and science, and then at night my cousin Lara came over to watch Pretty Little Liars with me, because it was the premiere episode of season 4! As always, PLL was exciting, and had tons of plot twists!

what i heard

The beginning of this week I was listening to Mykonos by the Fleet Foxes on repeat practically every waking moment because I am trying to learn to play it by ear on the piano. My progress on that task so far has been good!

BUT, on Tuesday I found out that I was going to go to the Taylor Swift concert TOMORROW for FREE, and so my playlist automatically switched over to Taylor Swift because that’s what I do the week before I go to a concert!!! And I had to cram my week of non-stop listening to the artist into 3 days!

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I essentially just re-hash the events of my week, bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

This week I read two books by Katie McGarry. I started off with Pushing the Limits, which was fantastic! I loved reading about Echo and Noah and their story. After that I read Dare You To, which I liked even more than Pushing the Limits! I should have my review up tomorrow for that one. (If not, I’m really sorry! I’m going to my friend’s cottage today and so as I write this I should be packing, but I’m trying to schedule blog posts for while I’m away!)

As for books I got this week, I have quite the haul. Also, I just realized this week that there is a Meme out there called In My Mailbox, and I feel SO BAD for posting a similar thing here without crediting them, so from now on, credit for this goes to The Story Siren!

book haul may 23-30

I bought all of these books from a thrift store, and all of them together only cost me 20$!!!

what i did

Last Friday I went to Yogurty’s (an amazing serve yourself yogurt shop) with my friend Sondra! We had some yummy frozen yogurt (that I forgot to take a picture of…)

Saturday I hung out with my friends Isabelle and Lara, and we made some DIY high-waisted shorts! In the picture, the bottom two pairs are ones I made last summer, and the top two are the ones I made this summer! (the colouring looks a little off on the pink pair. They start out purple and fade to a not quite as bright pink in reality :P)

The rest of the week I worked – A LOT! But on Wednesday I attended a “Bookish Party” hosted by Cassie and Judith on Twitter. Check out the hashtag #bookishparty if you want to see the all the craziness that was the party! During the party, I was also in a google hangout with my bookish friends AmberDebby, Cassie, and Judith! It was a lot of fun getting to hear everyone’s different accents, and talking BOOKS!
what i heard

This week, I found out that Lennon and Maisy (who are the daughters of the Country Duo The Stellas) sang a cover of Ho Hey by the Lumineers on Nashville! Needless to say, I fell in love with it, and it is LITERALLY the only song I was listening to this week.

Friday Flashback: May 17, 2013 – May 23, 2013

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I essentially just re-hash the events of my week, bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

I didn’t have too much time to read this week, so I only made it through two books. I read Delirium by Lauren Oliver, and I honestly fell in love with it. My review will be coming soon! After that, I read The Vincent Boys, which I am finishing right after I finish writing this post. I can tell you that at this point, I’m pretty much just making myself finish this book. There are some okay parts to it, and I’m slightly interested to see what happens, but there’s practically no story at all! And it’s soooo repetitive. It just needs to end already.

As for books I bought this week, I got my second Sarah Dessen book, That Summer, as I intend to now read all of her books in the order they were published. This suggestion was given to me by Sarah! I also managed to pick up two other books this week for only two (that’s right, 2!!!) dollars each!!! I got Insatiable by Meg Cabot, and Steven Tyler’s memoir called Does the Noise Inside my Head Bother You?

what i did

This past week was really busy for me! Last friday night I went over to my friend Stephanie’s house with two of my other girlfriends, and we watched The Ugly Truth. That movie is probably one of my favourite romantic comedies ever! It’s just so good! If you haven’t seen it, you must watch it!!!!

Saturday night I went to my friend Matt’s house for a bit of a small long weekend get together. Not too much exciting happened there, but I got to see some friends I haven’t seen for a little while, so that was nice! We also finalized some plans to go away to a friend’s cottage next weekend with a bunch of people, so I’m looking forward to that! Reading books on a dock, or on the beach, with an adult beverage nearby… It’s going to be awesome!! :D

Sunday my one of my very best friends Matt came over (different Matt than above. FUN FACT: I know so many people named Matt it’s actually ridiculous!!!) Since it was so nice out we had a really nice time laying out by my pool and tanning while reading our books and chatting about the current gossip in our group of friends, and we went swimming too! I love having a friend that loves to read as much as I do, and doesn’t mind coming over to “hang out” and end up just reading for a little while!

On Monday, it was Victoria Day in Canada. That means a day off of work YAY!!!! I found very last minute that one of my favourite bands was going to be playing a free – that’s right everyone, FREE – concert in Toronto on Victoria Day!!! So, on Monday morning I hopped on the train with a friend to meet up with another friend already in Toronto to see Lady Antebellum perform a free concert!!!! It was so amazing, and they are fantastic live. They sound just like their recording. Here are some pictures I took of the concert:

Hillary is due to have her baby in June and is still performing!!!

Tuesday night I went to my friend Brittany’s house with 4 other girls and we had ourselves a fun little girls night in! We drank some wine, gossiped, watched Bridesmaids, and just had an altogether really fun night!

Yesterday I participated in my first Inside Ride. Inside Ride is a charity that works to raise money for children with cancer, or who are trying to regain their old life once they have received their treatment. Basically, the participants find people to sponsor them to ride a stationary bike for ten minutes, on a team with five other people who will also ride the bike for 10 minutes each. There are prizes for the team that clocks the most kilometres on their bike, the team with the best costumes, and the team with the most spirit! Oh yeah, your team has to come up with a theme and dress accordingly too! It’s so much fun! I entered the Inside Ride with a team from the grocery store that I work at. Our theme was Alice in Wonderland, and we seriously went all out! I was dressed as the Queen of Hearts, and we had an Alice, a Mad Hatter, and a Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum! We also had a bunch of props set up on and around our bike to create “Wonderland.” Here are some photos that my friend Allie over at Allison Howard Photography took:

what i heard

I listened to a lot of Lady Antebellum leading up to their concert, and didn’t listen to anything else! I had their first two album’s on repeat, and was listening a lot to their newest single, Downtown.

what i liked

Friday Flashback: May 3, 2013 – May 16, 2013

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I will essentially just re-hash the events of my week, bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

This Friday Flashback post will be for the last two weeks, as I was too busy last week to write a post!

what i read

Although I thought I would be able to finish Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare by the time my last Friday Flashback posted, I didn’t, so I ended up finishing that last week. After that I went on to read Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham. Then I read Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver, which I had borrowed from my friend. I also read This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith for the Spring Into Summer Read-Along. Finally, I started Delirium by Lauren Oliver which I will be half reading/half listening to while I’, on the treadmill! So far I’m really liking the audiobook reading.

Now I’ll tell you about some books I got in the past two weeks. Usually, I start off with the books that I bought that week, but I managed to keep my wallet shut this week and didn’t buy any!!! Yay for me :D As for other books, like I said above, I borrowed Before I Fall from my friend. I was approved for some books on NetGalley this week too! Here they are:

books i got 2

Ink by Amanda Sun
Escape from Eden by Elisa Nader
Gated by Amy Christine Parker
Twigs by Alison Ashley Formento
Dragonfly by Leigh Talbert Moore
Outcast by Adrienne Kress
Dare You To by Katie McGarry

what i did

Last week I started a re-watch of Gilmore Girls with my mom, who has never seen the show before. Shocking, right?!?! Anyways, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the series from beginning to end, and I’m looking forward to getting to watch it all again with my mom. She’s really liking it so far, and I even got her to read Someday, Someday, Maybe!

Sunday was my friend’s 19th birthday, so we went to the Martini House to celebrate! We had a really great time :) After the Martini House we went to Boston Pizza to have a few more (cheaper) drinks. I love going out for my friend’s birthdays, and I can’t wait until my best friend turns 19 next month!

Yesterday, I bought tickets to go see The Backstreet Boys and Jesse McCartney concert, and I don’t care who knows it!!! I am a 19 year old girl who will be living out 12 year old Natalie’s dream of seeing them both live in concert! The concert is taking place at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, which is one of my favourite venues! I can’t wait for August 7th!!! :D
what i heard

Since I decided last week that I was going to go see the Backstreet Boys and Jesse McCartney, this week I listened to a lot of their old music.

I think I’m more excited to see Jesse McCartney than I am for the Backstreet Boys though! :O but seriously, isn’t Jesse just so cute!?

Friday Flashback: April 26, 2013 – May 2, 2013

friday flashback

Today is my first ever Friday Flashback, a post where I will essentially just re-hash the events of my week, bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

I finished reading The Host by Stephanie Meyer, and I also watched the movie! From there, I went on to read The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. It was my first Sarah Dessen book, and honestly, I fell in love. After that, I started Clockwork Angel, which I am still reading! (more specifically, am reading while I write this post. most likely I will have finished the book by the time this has posted!)

I also got a few books this week too! I picked up Keep Sweet by Michele Dominguez Greene, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, Looking for Alaska by John Green, This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith, Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham, and The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. I also received a copy of Angelfall by Susan Ee, courtesy of Octavia from Read Sleep Repeat! Thanks Octavia! Lastly, I was approved by NetGalley for Dare You To by Katie McGarry!

what i did

indigoOn Friday I interviewed for a job at Indigo, which is a Canadian bookstore chain. They have everything in there, including a large music section, and loads of cute notebooks and knick-knacks! I have a good feeling about how the interview went, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much. I found out today (Friday) whether I got the job or not, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

the big weddingLast Friday I also went to the movies with two of my friends and we saw The Big Wedding. It thought it was a pretty good movie myself, and the end of it had a very Crazy Stupid Love feel to it. Which is good, because that is one of my favourite movies! It was a very funny chick flick with the perfect amount of drama, and it had Amanda Seyfried in it who is one of my favourite actresses. Not to mention the movie also starred Topher Grace and Ben Barnes, two unbelievably gorgeous guys ;) That only made it better!

the lumineers

On Tuesday, I was lucky enough to score tickets to see The Lumineers at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton! This concert was faaaaaantastic! The Lumineers are an acoustic folk band, and if you don’t know them you NEED to look them up! One of their singles is Ho Hey, and I know it’s a pretty popular one, so YOUTUBE IT! Anyways, this band sounds exactly like their recordings, and just were oh so good!!!

what i heard

This week I listened to a lot of the Lumineers leading up to the concert. Here are some of my faves of theirs!

I also rediscovered by love of Mumford and Sons song After the Storm. I love this song, and one specific line I LOVE is “With grace in your heart, and flowers in your hair.”

Needless to say, I was definitely on an acoustic folk music kick this week!
