Top Ten Characters I’d NEVER Want to Trade Places With

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is about the characters – for whatever reason – that you would never ever in a million years trade places with. Monica and I decided to spilt this one up this week, and we each chose 5 characters we would never trade places with! So, in no particular order…

Monica’s Choices!

  1. Harry Potter (Harry Potter Series): I mean, as cool as it would be to realize you were “the chosen one” and all that, would you REALLY want to be? I mean sure it’d be fun being someone like Ron or Neville who helped out and got credit for being awesome but being Harry himself? No thanks, that would mean taking on even more responsibility than I already have PLUS you’d have to deal with the pressure of having to kill one of the most powerful, dangerous and scary people in the world.
  2. Bella Swan (Twilight Series): Honestly, maybe I just didn’t like her that much in general, but as gorgeous as Rob Pattinson is, would you really want someone around who basically stalked you and was addicted to your blood? Added to that you have a younger werewolf with some serious angst also pining for you.  Sorry, I know both of them are incredibly attractive but I’d probably get annoyed with them for a) stalking me and b) obnoxiously warning me about another guy.
  3. Gemma Doyle (Great and Terrible Beauty): First off, her family life is just going downhill (that’s all I’m saying, no spoilers from me!) and she gets shipped off to a boarding school.  She may be able to transport to other realms but what if you get stuck there? What if your friends get stuck there and blame you? I’d rather stay with two feet in the real world and just live in London.
  4. Simon (City of Bones Series): Again, it’s really hard to say why I wouldn’t trade places with him without giving away anything to people who haven’t read it, but it’s pretty obvious he’s in love with his best friend. And she doesn’t reciprocate, which frankly, sucks.  That alone would make me not want to trade places with him, though I’d probably hang out with him.
  5. Nick Carroway (The Great Gatsby): At first you’d want to trade places with him then you realize that being him would actually be the worst.  His cousin Daisy, and his ‘friend’ who he just met use him as a go between to get together and then Daisy’s husband also reveals that he’s cheating to Nick.  The guy keeps so many secrets and has to play it cool, something I definitely couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do.

  1. Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games Trilogy): Okay okay, I know she’s a kickass heroine and all that great stuff, but personally? I wouldn’t be able to handle all of that pressure! She’s started a revolution that she didn’t even mean to start, she’s got two very gorgeous boys pining after her but can’t bring her self to choose which one she wants to be with, and OH YEAH! She gets plucked out of her life into an arena to fight TO THE DEATH not once, but twice! Mmhmmm, I think I’m good where I am right now thank you very much.
  2. Georgina Nicolson (Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging): Basically, this girl is hilarious. Unfortunately, her hilarity does not make up for how super awkward her life is! I wouldn’t be able to handle some/most of the things that happen to this girl. Nor do I look good in a beret!
  3. Juliette (Shatter Me): I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. Juliette’s touch kills people. I would go insane if I had to grow up in the absence of human touch, and not being able to hold and hug the people you love would be torture.
  4. Angie Chapman (Pretty Girl-13): Angie goes missing, shows up on her doorstep three years later, and can’t remember anything about the time she was gone, nor remember that she was actually missing. Aside from missing three years of my life from my memory, I wouldn’t really be a fan of getting kidnapped either. And I don’t want to give away any spoilers here, but as Angie’s memories begin to resurface, we learn that some pretty awful things happened to her when she was kidnapped. I would not ever want to experience what she did.
  5. Meggie (Inkheart): Meggie has the ability to enter the worlds of the books she reads, as well as read characters out of them by reading aloud from them. Sounds pretty great, right??! WRONG! She has no control over this power, and what if she was reading a really scary book or something?? I mean, this whole post evidences that there are some characters and worlds that we would never want to enter. So, although Meggie’s gift has it’s merits, it is also a curse. No thanks!

So tell me: What characters would you never trade places with? Why? Are there any people that you would LOVE to trade places with?? WE WANT TO KNOW!

Top Ten Things on My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is all about things on our reading wish list – the things that you want writers to write more of, if you could make them do it! So, in no particular order…

1) A Timeturner!!!

Okay, so this isn’t exactly something that I want authors to write more of, it’s just something that I want that would greatly improve my reading life!! I mean, come on. Who hasn’t dreamed of having a timeturner like Hermione Granger so that you could go back and have more time in your day?? A timeturner would be great because its usefulness would not end with more reading time. NO SIR! You could go back and do something you might have forgotten to do earlier but had a deadline, or you could use it for its intended purpose and take a few extra classes at school! ;)

2) Country Boys

I can’t get enough of Tucker from the Unearthly series, and I just love country boys! Probably because I don’t know any myself and dream of the day that I will and that we’ll fall in love and he’ll sing me country songs and drive me around in his pickup truck and…. well, you get the point. And don’t go recommending me The Vincent Boys, because ooooooh no, I was not a big fan of Beau the “country boy” from that one.

3) Time Travel

Okay, so maybe this one does kind of fit in with my first point about a timeturner. I think that time travel stories are great, if they’re written well. I don’t know what appeals to me so much about them, but I just love them!

4) Parents that are present/not single parent

A lot of YA novels have families where the parents are split up and one of them is very absent in the MC’s life, or families where one of the parents is dead and the MC has to deal with that grief. I don’t see what is so bad about maybe writing a book where the MC’s family and parents are both present!!! Even if they are split up, it would be nice for them both to play a role in the story. I also think that stories with alternative families would be a good read. For example, a story where the MC has two moms or two dads. It’s not something you usually read.

5) Books that take place in college/university

YA books seems to be stuck in high school, and I think that there been to be more books that take place in first or second year college/university! I am in my first year of university, and I definitely still consider myself a “young adult” and probably will for the next few years. Someone write me more books like Fangirl!!!

Well, that’s it for this time – I only have 5!

So tell me: What are things are on your reading wishlist? Do you know of any books that feature any of the topic I mentioned above that I’m looking for?? I WANT TO KNOW!

Harry Potter Book Mash!!!

Hi everyone! Today I’m supposed to be doing a lot of packing for school, so I’ve got to keep the post short! I wanted to do something a little fun, and something that touches upon my favourite book series ever. The solution? HARRY POTTER BOOK MASH!!! YAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

You all remember playing MASH when you were a kid, right? Well, if not, basically it was a game to decide your future!! So, I’ve included the categories husband, best friend, job, pet, number of kids, favourite subject, and Hogwart’s school house! LET THE FUN BEGIN!

photo-12

So, after a bunch of counting lines and crossing names out, THE RESULTS ARE IN!

Husband: Ron Weasley
Best Friend: Luna Lovegood
Job: Auror
Pet: Trevor
Kids: 2
Favourite Subject: Herbology
House: Gryffindor

Below is a Mr Linky for you to attach your own book mash games if you want to! You don’t have to do Harry Potter, and you don’t even have to stick to one book or series! Try mixing things up and include a bunch of different characters from a variety of genres, and maybe you can even include a category for where you live!!! HAVE FUN!!!

Jamie’s A to Z Book Survey!

Hey y’all!!! I’m back! I’ve been away from the blog for almost two weeks now – with the exception of last week’s Top Ten Tuesday because I just couldn’t resist – and here’s why! From July 31-August 5 I was at an amazing country music festival in Bowmanville Ontario called Boots and Hearts. I heard so much great music from so many amazing artists, spent some time with good friends, and made a few new friends too! I’ll definitely be writing up a separate post about that festival for all you country lovers out there – ahem, Rachel ;) Anyway, I was back from that adventure on Monday, so you’re probably wondering what else I have been up to!

Well, as most of you know, I’m headed to Queen’s University in September, and I am BEYOND excited about it! So this past week I’ve been trying to gather together the last few things that I am going to need for my time there. I also found out what dorm I will be staying in this week, and it is the wonderful Waldron Tower, nicknamed Wally :) My building is located right on Lake Ontario, and was built so that every single room has a lake view! How awesome is that?! I’ve also heard some speculation that my building is haunted by a nurse who used to live in it…. So that’s a little creepy. You can read more about that here. Anywhooooo, that’s what I’ve been up to!

So, what better way to bring myself back into the blogging world after my unexpected hiatus than a fun book survey created by Jamie over at the Perpetual Page Turner!!! Here we go:

Author you’ve read the most books from:

Lemony Snicket! Oh, the good old Series of Unfortunate Events ;)

Best Sequel Ever:

Dare You To by Katie McGarry. Pushing the Limits was amazing, and I can’t wait for Crash Into You!

Currently Reading:

Asylum by Madeline Roux and If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Drink of Choice While Reading:

Water or tea! In the summer though iced coffee is my go to drink :)

E-reader or Physical Book?

Oh I love my physical books! For me, reading off of an e-reader just isn’t the same. BUT, I do like having it for some of my review copies.

Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Actually Dated In High School:

Wes from The Truth About Forever. Wes is one of my favourite book boyfriends, and I TOTALLY would have dated him in high school! Macy describes him as “quiet and incredible” and that is just so perfect for him. He creates these amazing metal sculptures from scrap metal, and he’s totally gorgeous, but doesn’t even know it. He’s a reformed bad boy, so you get the good boy and bad boy all in one package!! ;)

Glad You Gave This Book A Chance:

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfruend. This book was on my list of Top Ten Intimidating Books, but I am so glad that I finally gave it a chance! I ended up LOVING this book to bits, and I can’t wait to read Across a Star-Swept Sea!

Hidden Gem Book:

The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna

Important Moment in your Reading Life:

Stumbling upon book blogs! I’ve always been a reader, but I used to be the type of person to read a book, and forget about it right after I finished it. Once I started blogging, I’ve noticed that I retain way more information about the books that I read, and I also find out about so many other amazing books!

Just Finished:

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfruend

Kinds of Books You Won’t Read:

I’m not a huge fan of non-fiction books, or of adult books – they scare me!!!

Longest Book You’ve Read:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix (870 pages)

Major book hangover because of:

If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch

Number of Bookcases You Own:

3. Two are built in to the window seat in my bedroom, and one is downstairs and houses all of the books from when I was a kid. But I need more shelves – badly!!

One Book You Have Read Multiple Times:

The Harry Potter Series. Let’s be honest, I’ve definitely read this series about 5 times through.

Preferred Place To Read:

Curled up in my corner of the couch, or in bed!

Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read:

“Maybe you can afford to wait. Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow. Maybe for you there’s one thousand tomorrows, or three thousand, or ten, so much time you can bathe in it, roll around it, let it slide like coins through you fingers. So much time you can waste it.
But for some of us there’s only today. And the truth is, you never really know.” Delirium, by Lauren Oliver

Reading Regret:

I’d have to say The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I had to read this for grade 10 English in high school, and I really just didn’t like this book.

Series You Started And Need To Finish(all books are out in series):

OMG there are so many!!! I am horrible with starting a series and then just leaving it hanging there, even though I so badly want to know what is going to happen! Let’s see, Unearthly series, Delirium series, The Infernal Devices… the list goes on.

Three of your All-Time Favorite Books:

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfruend, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Unapologetic Fangirl For:

JK Rowling. No explanation needed.

Very Excited For This Release More Than All The Others:

Across a Star-Swept Sea. I NEED to see what is going to happen to Kai and Elliot!

Worst Bookish Habit:

Probably throwing my books into my bags and purses without seeing how they land, and then they come out kind of bent…

X Marks The Spot: Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book:

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Your latest book purchase:

A whole lot of books from garage sales a few weekends ago! There were probably about twenty books!

ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late):

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas was guilty of this!!! I just NEEDED TO KNOW what was going to happen next and how everything was going to play out!

Friday Flashback: May 31, 2013 – June 13, 2013

friday flashback

Friday Flashback is a post where I essentially just re-hash the events of my week (or two weeks in this particular case), bookish and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

what i read

These past two weeks I read That Summer by Sarah Dessen, Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler, The Secret Ingredient by Stewart Lewis, and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo! The first two books are beach-y, summery types of books because I was at a cottage last weekend, and I felt that fit the atmosphere. The Secret Ingredient was an eARC from NetGalley and I read and reviewed, and Shadow and Bone was read because I’m going to the Fierce Reads tour next week and I’m meeting Leigh Bardugo!

As for books that I picked up this week, I have a few different sources. I checked out a used book store close to my house, and I picked up four books there for only 3 dollars each! Hardcover copies of Nineteen Minutes by Jody Picoult, Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella, and Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin, as well as a paperpack copy of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I received an ARC of Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith from Harper Teen this past week as well (even though it’s been out for a little bit :P) From NetGalley I received eARCs of Burning by Elana K. Arnold, Parasite by Mira Grant, and Skin by Donna Jo Napoli. I also bought The 100 Year Old Man who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.

what i did

The weekend before last I went one of my friend’s cottage with about 10 other friends for four days! We had a great time hanging around the beach, and hanging in the house too (it was rainy for two of the days). Also, my friends and I are very musical people, so there were about 4 guitars down there and everyone was playing music and signing along and it was great!

After getting home on Monday night, I got sick :( I had a pretty bad cold, so I had to call into work sick for two of my shifts. I was feeling a little better by Friday, so I ended up going out with Lara, Emily, Stephanie and Vikki to see the movie The Internship. We all loved it and thought it was HILARIOUS!

Monday brought one of the most exciting things I’ve done in a while, and that was have a Harry Potter (half) Movie Marathon!!! WE watched the first 4 movies (hence the half-marathon) and it took us from 10 in the morning until 10 at night, with lunch and dinner breaks thrown in there. What made it so awesome is that the four of us that had the marathon are all HP fanatics, so the event was complete with a bunch of Harry Potter food, butterbeer, wands, and Hogwarts house decorations!485611_4465016117217_61546441_n

Tuesday I had a hair appointment and got more blonde highlights put in my hair. I have a bad habit of changing my hair colour, and I always seem to come back to blonde, so I’ve decided that I am going to go blonde and stay blonde for a while!!! (Plus blonde was my natural hair colour as a kid, so it’s what I’m used to.) I can’t wait until I’m fully blonde again! Later on the day I tutored a few kids in math and science, and then at night my cousin Lara came over to watch Pretty Little Liars with me, because it was the premiere episode of season 4! As always, PLL was exciting, and had tons of plot twists!

what i heard

The beginning of this week I was listening to Mykonos by the Fleet Foxes on repeat practically every waking moment because I am trying to learn to play it by ear on the piano. My progress on that task so far has been good!

BUT, on Tuesday I found out that I was going to go to the Taylor Swift concert TOMORROW for FREE, and so my playlist automatically switched over to Taylor Swift because that’s what I do the week before I go to a concert!!! And I had to cram my week of non-stop listening to the artist into 3 days!

what i posted

My ARC review of Dare You To by Katie McGarry.

A Twenty Boy Summer inspired manicure.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider

My intro post for the Summer of Stand Alones challenge.

A Shadow and Bone inspired manicure.

My review of Delirium by Lauren Oliver. This on is up a full month after I finished the book because I just couldn’t think of the WORDS.

My ARC review of The Secret Ingredient by Stewart Lewis.

My top ten beach reads TBR list.

Waiting on Wednesday: Contaminated by Em Garner.

So tell me, did you do anything exciting this week? What did you read? What did you listen to? Anything on the internet this week that I should check out??? I’m all ears :)

Top Ten Books I Want to Reread

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is a freebie, yay!!!! So I decided to post about the top ten books I want to re-read. Some of these are middle grade books that I just loved so much, and some are YA books that I just can’t get enough of! So, in no particular order…

reread11) The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket: This series was one of my favourite childhood series, and I feel like if I read it now there would be some humour and references that my 10 year old self might not have picked up on. And I recently got the entire series as e-books so now I can reread them whenever I want!

2) Crank by Ellen Hopkins: I read this book when I was in grade 7, and I REALLY think I was too young for it then. I distinctly remember being unable to put this book down, and reading it under my desk in school. I’d like to reread it because I feel like it would have a lot more of an impact on me now.

3) The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Series by Ann Brashares: Again, this is a series that I really liked when I was younger, and I just want to read it again because I don’t remember too much about what happens in the last two books.

4) The Giver by Lois Lowry: I read this book back in elementary school, and I loved it. I even got my mom to read it and she really liked it too! I picked up Gathering Blue at a thrift store the other day, and I recently found out that a third book has been added to this series. I would like to reread The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger before I read the finale, Son.

5) Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke: I remember reading this book when I was quite young, and really really enjoying it! I own the first two books, but I don’t think I ever read the sequel. I want to eventually get around to reading it, so before I do that I will reread Inkheart!

reread2

6) Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling: Okok, we all know I’ve already read and reread this series on multiple occasions, but I’m never not going to want to reread it, SO JUST DEAL WITH IT! (also, just deal with the blatant double negative there too!)

7) The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins: It’s just SO GOOD, so why not??

8) All of Roald Dahl’s Books: I adored these books as a child, especially Matilda. I think it would be nice to get to experience reading them all again!

9) The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna: I honestly just loved this book so much, as witnessed here in my review, and I could read it again any time!

10) 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson: I read this probably 6 or 7 years ago, and it’s just one of those books I want to reread!

Top Ten Characters I Would Crush On If I Were Also A Fictional Character

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s topic is all about the characters you would crush on if you too were a fictional character. Or, you know, all those book boyfriends you secretly have ;) Well, here we go! My top ten book boyfriends are: (in no particular order)

1) Four/Tobias from Divergent by Veronica Roth: Love love LOOOOOVE this boy. There is something just so raw and real about him. I can’t really explain it. Continue reading
