Top Ten Underrated YA Books

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday topic is about underrated books and/or authors, and I decided to narrow mine down to books in the YA genre.  This list is composed of nine books that I feel not enough people have read, or ones that I loved that not a lot of people talk about or have heard of! I am also including my favourite quote from each book.  So, in no particular order… (click the image to go to goodreads!)

sisters in sanitySisters in Sanity by Gayle Forman

That’s all we can do, Brit. Take steps. Take enough of them and suddenly, you’re somewhere.

Love and other perishable itemsLove and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo

She even takes the goings-on of fictitious characters personally.

smart girls get what they want

Smart Girls Get What They Want by Sarah Strohmeyer

In fiction, I searched for my favorite authors, women I have trusted to reassure me than not all teenage guys are total ditwads, that the archetype of the noble cute hero who devotes himself to the girl he loves has not gone the way of the rotary phone. That all I had to do was be myself (smart, hardworking, funny) and be patient and kind and he and I would find each other.

As Bea would say, this why they call it fiction.

for darkness shows the stars

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund

Envy hurt exponentially more than heartbreak because your soul was torn in two, half soaring with happiness for another person, half mired in a well of selfpity and pain.

the duff cover

The DUFF: The Designated Ugly Fat Friend

Wesley Rush was the most disgusting womanizing playboy to ever darken the doorstep of Hamilton High… but he was kind of hot. Maybe if you could put him on mute… and cut off his hands… maybe—just maybe—he’d be tolerable then. Otherwise, he was a real piece of shit. Horn dog shit.

pretty girl13

 Pretty Girl-13 by Liz Coley

For three long years, all I’ve wanted to know was what happened to you. Now… I don’t honestly know if I want you to remember.

wild awake

Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith

People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.

the lost girl

The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna

What is this power the dead have over the ones they leave behind? It’s strange and beautiful and frightening, this deathless love that human beings continue to feel for the ones they’ve lost.

if you find me

If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch

Funny how we can’t hold onto time, even when it’s strapped to our wrists.

So tell me: What books or authors do you think are underrated? Are there any of these books that you think you might add to your TBR? Have you read any of these books already? I WANT TO KNOW!

Top Ten Characters I’d NEVER Want to Trade Places With

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is about the characters – for whatever reason – that you would never ever in a million years trade places with. Monica and I decided to spilt this one up this week, and we each chose 5 characters we would never trade places with! So, in no particular order…

Monica’s Choices!
Screen Shot 2014-01-20 at 12.00.38 AM

  1. Harry Potter (Harry Potter Series): I mean, as cool as it would be to realize you were “the chosen one” and all that, would you REALLY want to be? I mean sure it’d be fun being someone like Ron or Neville who helped out and got credit for being awesome but being Harry himself? No thanks, that would mean taking on even more responsibility than I already have PLUS you’d have to deal with the pressure of having to kill one of the most powerful, dangerous and scary people in the world.
  2. Bella Swan (Twilight Series): Honestly, maybe I just didn’t like her that much in general, but as gorgeous as Rob Pattinson is, would you really want someone around who basically stalked you and was addicted to your blood? Added to that you have a younger werewolf with some serious angst also pining for you.  Sorry, I know both of them are incredibly attractive but I’d probably get annoyed with them for a) stalking me and b) obnoxiously warning me about another guy.
  3. Gemma Doyle (Great and Terrible Beauty): First off, her family life is just going downhill (that’s all I’m saying, no spoilers from me!) and she gets shipped off to a boarding school.  She may be able to transport to other realms but what if you get stuck there? What if your friends get stuck there and blame you? I’d rather stay with two feet in the real world and just live in London.
  4. Simon (City of Bones Series): Again, it’s really hard to say why I wouldn’t trade places with him without giving away anything to people who haven’t read it, but it’s pretty obvious he’s in love with his best friend. And she doesn’t reciprocate, which frankly, sucks.  That alone would make me not want to trade places with him, though I’d probably hang out with him.
  5. Nick Carroway (The Great Gatsby): At first you’d want to trade places with him then you realize that being him would actually be the worst.  His cousin Daisy, and his ‘friend’ who he just met use him as a go between to get together and then Daisy’s husband also reveals that he’s cheating to Nick.  The guy keeps so many secrets and has to play it cool, something I definitely couldn’t and wouldn’t want to do.

Natalie’s Choices
Screen Shot 2014-01-20 at 12.00.38 AM

  1. Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games Trilogy): Okay okay, I know she’s a kickass heroine and all that great stuff, but personally? I wouldn’t be able to handle all of that pressure! She’s started a revolution that she didn’t even mean to start, she’s got two very gorgeous boys pining after her but can’t bring her self to choose which one she wants to be with, and OH YEAH! She gets plucked out of her life into an arena to fight TO THE DEATH not once, but twice! Mmhmmm, I think I’m good where I am right now thank you very much.
  2. Georgina Nicolson (Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging): Basically, this girl is hilarious. Unfortunately, her hilarity does not make up for how super awkward her life is! I wouldn’t be able to handle some/most of the things that happen to this girl. Nor do I look good in a beret!
  3. Juliette (Shatter Me): I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. Juliette’s touch kills people. I would go insane if I had to grow up in the absence of human touch, and not being able to hold and hug the people you love would be torture.
  4. Angie Chapman (Pretty Girl-13): Angie goes missing, shows up on her doorstep three years later, and can’t remember anything about the time she was gone, nor remember that she was actually missing. Aside from missing three years of my life from my memory, I wouldn’t really be a fan of getting kidnapped either. And I don’t want to give away any spoilers here, but as Angie’s memories begin to resurface, we learn that some pretty awful things happened to her when she was kidnapped. I would not ever want to experience what she did.
  5. Meggie (Inkheart): Meggie has the ability to enter the worlds of the books she reads, as well as read characters out of them by reading aloud from them. Sounds pretty great, right??! WRONG! She has no control over this power, and what if she was reading a really scary book or something?? I mean, this whole post evidences that there are some characters and worlds that we would never want to enter. So, although Meggie’s gift has it’s merits, it is also a curse. No thanks!

So tell me: What characters would you never trade places with? Why? Are there any people that you would LOVE to trade places with?? WE WANT TO KNOW!

Top Ten Things on My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is all about things on our reading wish list – the things that you want writers to write more of, if you could make them do it! So, in no particular order…

1) A Timeturner!!!

Okay, so this isn’t exactly something that I want authors to write more of, it’s just something that I want that would greatly improve my reading life!! I mean, come on. Who hasn’t dreamed of having a timeturner like Hermione Granger so that you could go back and have more time in your day?? A timeturner would be great because its usefulness would not end with more reading time. NO SIR! You could go back and do something you might have forgotten to do earlier but had a deadline, or you could use it for its intended purpose and take a few extra classes at school! ;)

2) Country Boys

I can’t get enough of Tucker from the Unearthly series, and I just love country boys! Probably because I don’t know any myself and dream of the day that I will and that we’ll fall in love and he’ll sing me country songs and drive me around in his pickup truck and…. well, you get the point. And don’t go recommending me The Vincent Boys, because ooooooh no, I was not a big fan of Beau the “country boy” from that one.

3) Time Travel

Okay, so maybe this one does kind of fit in with my first point about a timeturner. I think that time travel stories are great, if they’re written well. I don’t know what appeals to me so much about them, but I just love them!

4) Parents that are present/not single parent

A lot of YA novels have families where the parents are split up and one of them is very absent in the MC’s life, or families where one of the parents is dead and the MC has to deal with that grief. I don’t see what is so bad about maybe writing a book where the MC’s family and parents are both present!!! Even if they are split up, it would be nice for them both to play a role in the story. I also think that stories with alternative families would be a good read. For example, a story where the MC has two moms or two dads. It’s not something you usually read.

5) Books that take place in college/university

YA books seems to be stuck in high school, and I think that there been to be more books that take place in first or second year college/university! I am in my first year of university, and I definitely still consider myself a “young adult” and probably will for the next few years. Someone write me more books like Fangirl!!!

Well, that’s it for this time – I only have 5!

So tell me: What are things are on your reading wishlist? Do you know of any books that feature any of the topic I mentioned above that I’m looking for?? I WANT TO KNOW!

Top Ten Sequels I Desperately Need To Read – because I have a series-ous problem

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is supposed to be about the top ten sequels we are most anticipating.  However, as most of you know I have a problem.  A serious one. (*sidenote* I tried to be punny in my title…. series-ous… Meh) I start so many series/trilogies and I never finish them! Hence, my little alteration to this week’s post.  I bring you: The Top Five Sequels I Desperately Need To Read So That I Can Finish Some of the 12987129487129387 Series I Am Currently in the Middle Of.  So, in no particular order… (click the title to head over to the goodreads!)

First five

unravel me title

Shatter Me was one of the first books I reviewed on my blog, which tells you how long ago I read it. It was amazing! It is still one of my favourite books to this day, so who knows why I haven’t read the sequel yet?! ‘Cause I don’t!

seige and storm

Again, Shadow and Bone was another fantastic book that for some reason I have not yet read the sequel of!  A kick-ass heroine, a perfectly evil dude, and one of the most creative and freshest ideas for a fantasy novel that I’ve read in ages – what more could you ask for?! I’ve also heard about this other guy in Siege and Storm… I think his name is Sturmhond and people love him??? ;)

inkspell title

I read Inkheart back when I was in grade 5 or 6, and I remember being so captivated by that book.  I went out an bought Inkspell right when it came out… but it’s been just sitting on my shelf ever since.

hallowed title

Honestly, I have absolutely no clue why I’ve put off reading Hallowed for so long, and I bet Jamie will be upset that I still haven’t read it!!!!

pretties title

The Uglies series was another that I started back in elementary school, and for some reason abandoned!!

second five

devoted title

I’ve heard that Devoted and the third instalment of Elixer, True, both have just gone dramatically downhill.  However, I have a morbid desire to read them just to see how everything pans out, and because I adore Hilary Duff and all that she does :P

scarle title

I read Cinder early this summer and absolutely loved that book!  In all honestly, I didn’t really expect to, even though everyone was raving about it.  I ended up being pleasantly surprised by it, and now I really can’t wait to read Scarlet!

across title

AHHHHH I actually cannot stop raving about For Darkness Shows the Stars, and I have been waiting forever for Across a Star-Swept Sea to be released!! But, gimme some slack on this one because it did only come out on the 15th of October, which was relatively recently…

cassandra clare titles

Again, I have no excuses. I really just need to power through both of these series.

So tell me: Do you have the same problem as I do?? If you don’t and you’ve read some of these sequels, what did you think of them? Were the better or not as good as the debut book in the series?? I WANT TO KNOW!

Top Ten Scariest (or Creepiest) Looking Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday

A weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish :)

Hey everyone!!! Did ya miss me??? It’s been about a month since I last blogged, and I can tell you that it has been torture for me not having the time to do it! Well, I think that I’ve finally gotten everything under control at school now, and can dedicate time to blogging again, which I’m super pumped about!!! So, I thought I would jump back in with a TTT :D (don’t expect anything too special on this one though, I’ve lost my groove :P)

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday post is all about those books with the covers that make you want to hide under the covers of your bed because they’re so scary (or creepy!) looking! Also, while looking for books with creepy covers, I noticed that I don’t really have a lot of them, I guess because I don’t really read that many scary books! I could only find seven. So, in no particular order…

the mumurings

The Murmurings by Carly Anne West

I’m getting a major “The Grudge” vibe from this book cover!!! I’ve not read The Murmurings yet, but it sounds really interesting/creepy.

asylum 2

Asylum by Madeleine Roux

This book has one scary cover if you ask me! The book is also chalk-full of these creeptastic photos! Read my review of Asylum here.

pretty girl13

Pretty Girl-13 by Liz Coley

For me, it’s the combination of the creepy picture and the scary font that makes this cover so scary!!! It might also be the fact that I know the story behind the cover, which is way scarier than it looks. If you haven’t read Pretty Girl-13, you really should check it out. Here’s my review!

insomnia j r johannson

Insomnia by J.R. Johnasson

The eyeeeeee. Eyes are creepy, okay? Especially in combination with everything else that’s going on in this cover. I haven’t picked up Insomnia yet, but it’s been on my list for a while! The MC enters the dream of the last person he made eye contact with every time he falls asleep. Intriguing??? YES!!!

brights light susan juby

Bright’s Light by Susan Juby

Don’t even get me started on this one. The blank stare on this porcelain? face is creeping me out to the max!!! It reminds me of a store mannequin, and boy, are those things every creepy!

ten gretchen mcneil

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Dark cover. Red writing. One creepy looking deserted island in the background. Again, I haven’t read this one yet, but how awesome does the description sound?!

Don’t spread the word!
Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

Well everyone, there you have it! Some of the scariest and creepiest book covers out there (to me anyways!) The book covers that make me want to do this:

home alone scream

So tell me: What are your thoughts on these books? Have you read any? What about the covers, are they scary/creepy to you too?! I WANT TO KNOW!

Pushing the Limits and Dare You To by Katie McGarry
pushing the limits dare you to

Come on, who doesn’t want to see Noah Hutchins and Ryan Stone brought to life?!

Angelfall by Susan Ee
This would make such an epic movie!! Plus, I don’t really know of any good angel movies out there yet, and I think this one would be fun!

Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
This book had such an interesting concept, and I think it would be cool to see it translate from the pages of the book onto the big screen!

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares
my name is memory
The story of Daniel and Sophia is so different, and it would make a great movie. I feel like it would have a similar vibe as the Time Traveller’s Wife in movie form. Regardless, if you haven’t read this book yet, DO IT!

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen
turth about forever
Macy and Wes’s story would make the cutest chick flick! This movie needs to be made!!!!

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
shadow and bone
HOW AMAZING WOULD THIS BE AS A MOVIE!!??!?!?!?! I can’t even.

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith
love at first sight
This book is probably one of the cutest books I have ever read, and if I got to experience it all over again in movie form I would die! I’m a sucker for a good chick flick.

The following two books are ones that I have been dying to be made into movies for YEARS, but now it is finally happening and it is so exciting I can’t handle it!!!!!

The Giver by Lois Lowry
the giver
I read this book about a million times when I was younger, so for this to be finally made into a movie is really awesome!!! I can’t wait to see it!

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusack
the book thief
Ever since I read this book 5 years ago for grade 9 English class, I have been dying for it to be made into a movie. I hope it lives up to my expectations!

So tell me: What do you think about these books being made into movies? Are there any that you wouldn’t want to be made into movies? I WANT TO KNOW!
